University of Nebraska-Lincoln Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts

Interdisciplinary

March 19, 2018

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts includes the Department of Art and Art History, the School of Music, and the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film. Affiliated units include the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, Lied Center for Performing Arts, Sheldon Museum of Art, and Nebraska Repertory Theatre.

The College’s Digital Arts Initiative is an interdisciplinary program designed to teach digital and computational skills to students throughout the college and throughout the university. The program is fundamental to a well-educated digital media artist interested in areas such as animation, game design, mobile application design, special effects, and other areas that require skills in both creativity and computer science.

The College of Engineering offers academic programs at UNL and at two campuses in Omaha. A variety of engineering programs are offered, including a shared computer science and engineering program with the College of Arts and Sciences and a Computer and Electronics Engineering program through the Peter Kiewit Institute. The Computer Science and Engineering Department is one of the top programs in the U.S., with its software engineering program among the top five in the country. The Kiewit Institute brings together the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s College of Information Science and Technology and UNL’s College of Engineering.

Assistant Professor of Film and Digital Arts Steve Kolbe is working with faculty in the College of Engineering’s Holland Computing Center to create software to “teach” UNL’s supercomputer cluster to generate or render computer-generated images for 3D animation projects without interference from other data processed by other sources on campus. His research is yielding discoveries in how to process large animation files quickly and is unique among programs in the Big Ten to make use of research super computers for the purpose of high-end graphics renderings.
