May 30, 2025
Stanford Arts has launched a new podcast series “Arts &,” illuminating the unexpected ways art drives innovative and collaborative research throughout the Stanford ecosystem, hosted by Ellen Oh, its Director of Interdisciplinary Arts Programs. The collaborations highlighted explore the intersections of
sculpture and oceanography. design and synthetic biology, theater & immersive technology. and music and sociology; through lively conversations at the intersection of disciplines, listeners will discover how creative approaches open up bold new possibilities for research, innovation, and societal impact.
Oh shares the impetus for the project: “There’s so much exciting, cross-disciplinary work happening at Stanford that often goes unseen. I wanted to find a way to bring those stories to light—especially the unexpected ways art intersects with other fields. When our content producer suggested a podcast, the format made sense. With Art &, we want to shift how people think about the arts—not just as something expressive, but as a form of creative research that can spark new ideas, offer fresh perspectives, and play a real role in tackling critical issues.”
Four episodes are available now:
- “Art &: The essential role of the arts” with Stanford Vice President for the Arts Deborah Cullinan
- “Art & Oceanography” with Mehr Kumar & Mark Baugh-Sasaki
- “Art & Migration” with Tomas Jimenez & Meklit Hadero
-
“Art & Digital Embodiment” with Cyan Deveaux & Scarlett Kim
