Texas Tech’s arts landscape is anchored by the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts, blending robust studio-based training with public performance, exhibition, and community engagement to inspire and educate students by instilling the intellectual, artistic, and communication skills that prepare them for success in disciplinary achievement and in interdisciplinary collaboration, whether as performers, creators, investigators, or educators in visual arts, dance, music, or theatre.
Students benefit from facilities that include advanced ceramics and sculpture studios, digital and traditional printmaking labs, a woodshop, metal shop, and digital media labs. Landmark Arts, the school’s exhibition program, hosts visiting artist lectures, juried shows, and student exhibitions in multiple on-campus galleries, including satellite spaces like the Charles Adams Studio Project (CASP) in downtown Lubbock.
Texas Tech’s School of Music delivers over 500 performances annually and is housed in the modern Hemmle Recital Hall. Students engage in solo and ensemble performance, composition, music education, and musicology, with support from specialized labs, such as the Performing Arts Research Lab (PeARL), and performance spaces, including the Kent R. Hance Chapel. The Vernacular Music Center offers intensive study in traditional, folk, and global music and dance.
The School of Theatre & Dance is home to both experimental and large-scale productions, supported by cutting-edge performance facilities such as the Charles E. Maedgen Jr. Theatre, Christine DeVitt Black Box Theatre, and Studio Performance Lab. These venues serve as living laboratories where students direct, design, choreograph, and perform. The department also houses the BurkTech Players, a collaborative initiative with the Burkhart Center for Autism Education & Research that produces sensory-accommodating performances for neurodiverse audiences, reinforcing the school’s mission of accessibility and inclusive arts engagement.
