Job Description
The Department of Media, Art and Design at the University of Missouri-Kansas City is conducting a search for the Dorothy and Dale Thompson Missouri Professorship in Global Arts with a focus on Museum Studies and Community-Engaged Curation. We are seeking applications from candidates who have expertise in art history or a related field with experience in museum studies and curatorial practice. We are seeking an outstanding faculty member to fulfill this full-time, benefit-eligible, ranked, tenure-eligible, 9-month endowed professorship position.
The successful candidate will design new undergraduate courses focused on developing museum professional skills and connecting students with communities in the urban sphere, and also offer art history or visual studies courses. They will have an exceptional approach to their own research, developing and maintaining a national and international reputation. They will be someone capable of collaborating across departments and programs. The selected candidate will mentor undergraduate students and strengthen the department’s collaborations with local art institutions. They will also play a critical role in the curation of the department’s own UMKC Gallery of Art, which hosts visiting artists, scholars, and gallery exhibitions; supplements coursework; and provides unique interactive learning opportunities outside of the classroom.
Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in Art History or terminal degree in a related field, such as Museum Studies, Global Studies, African and Africana Studies, American Studies, Asian Studies, Near Eastern Studies, Indigenous Studies, Visual Anthropology, and Visual Studies.
Applicants must have a record of success in academic research, professional curatorial experience, the ability to teach students from a variety of backgrounds, and skills in collaborating with diverse communities.
