CripTech Incubator Artists’ Exhibition opens at UC Irvine

Experiments in Art, Access, and Technology, or E.A.A.T., premieres September 30 at the Beall Center for Art and Technology at UC Irvine. This exhibit comprises new work created by artists in residence with the Leonardo CripTech Incubator, a platform for disabled artists to engage and remake creative technologies through the lens of accessibility.

The organizers of the exhibition describe it as “A first-of-its-kind program in the field, E.A.A.T. introduces innovative practices in art and technology that arise from—and viscerally embody— lived experiences of disability. Spanning spatial audio, surveillance technologies, gaming, software, haptics, auditory prostheses, and the built environment, E.A.A.T. artworks use the multisensory affordances of media arts to widen the horizon of access.”

A team from a2ru Ground Works is working closely with these artists to document their creative, collaborative processes in an online archive entitled Reco(r)ding CripTech. Reco(r)ding CripTech project leads Daragh Byrne and Elizabeth McLain will travel to Irvine to attend the exhibit opening, meet with artists and Leonardo team members, and collect documentation. Reco(r)ding CripTech is supported by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).
