Land Acknowledgement
A2ru acknowledges that the University of Michigan—our administrative home—occupies the ancestral, traditional, and contemporary lands of the Anishinaabeg (including Odawa, Ojibwe and Boodewadomi) and Wyandot peoples. In addition, we acknowledge that nearly all higher education institutions in the United States, including those in our network, stand on land that was obtained from indigenous peoples by coercive and destructive means. As we work and learn on these lands, we must also strive to understand the continuing consequences of these past actions and work to create a more just future by standing in solidarity with our indigenous communities. Acknowledgement is hollow without reflection and action.
We invite you to take the following actions:
- Use this tool to learn the indigenous groups historically lived in your area; use that as a starting point for further learning.
- Consider how you can meaningfully collaborate with and center the voices of your area’s indigenous people within your institution.
- Donate your time and/or financial support to organizations advocating for indigenous rights such as the American Indian College Fund, the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women, the Indigenous Environmental Network and the Indian Law Research Center.
