Knowledge of the materials and techniques used to create works of art can significantly inform art-historical understanding.


 

Technical Art History is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of works of art that employs scientific and historical methods to explore the processes used by artists and considers how materials and techniques influenced creative practices through time. Centered around case studies, this is a laboratory-based course that introduces students to a variety of methods and analytic tools.
