• Artists don’t typically start with a hypothesis, or structure their practice to prove that hypothesis. But I think that artistic practice can itself be a form of research and knowledge production. In art, the outcomes may be more open-ended, but they’re driven by a similar process of inquiry and desire for discovery.

Tattfoo Fan and the Art of Disaster Preparedness

Artist Tattfoo Fan’s New Earth MRE solves food shortage problems that accompany weather disasters caused by climate change.


 


Artist Tattfoo Fan lived through Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath; which included food shortages. The artist saw an opportunity to solve a problem since climate change and associated weather disruptions aren’t going away. Fan created a line of dehydrated foods under the brand name New Earth MRE which reminds fellow humans, “Don’t Despair, Be Prepared.” NPR interviewed Tattfoo Fan regarding his artistic approach to real life problem solving.
