• The a2ru Emerging Creatives Student Conference exemplifies a national movement that reaches beyond STEM to STEAM. It shows how interdisciplinary work inclusive of the arts can be further understood on its own terms, and it puts the tools with which to do so right into the students’ hands.

A Report on a2ru’s Emerging Creatives Student Conference

  • February 11, 2014
  • By a2ru
Success of the a2ru Emerging Creatives Student Conference (Jan 30 – Feb 1, 2014) creates demand for a yearly student conference.

The response to The Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities’ (a2ru’s) inaugural student conference was overwhelmingly positive and energetic. Students from the arts, engineering, design, computer science, and a great many other disciplines found themselves working deeply where their fields meet; students learned specific interdisciplinary skills for collaborative creation and built lasting networks with colleagues from across the country.

A summary of the conference’s goals and results is contained in Emerging Creatives: a Report on a2ru’s Inaugural Student Conference. The report is authored by Interim Executive Director Dr. Anthony Kolenic. A discussion of the activities and work in which students from partner universities were deeply engaged is also included.

The Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru) would like to thank our colleagues at Stanford University for hosting the event – particularly those at the Stanford Arts Institute and the Hasso Plattner Institute for Design. We also would like to extend our gratitude to leadership at a2ru partner universities and their students. An annual a2ru student conference is now under consideration.
